Historic holiday accommodation in Bruges – the Belgian Beauty

Bruges (Brugge) is one of the most glorious cities in Europe. Its wealth of stunning medieval architecture, the canal and its history, prompted UNESCO to name the city centre of Bruges a World Heritage Site. It is much smaller than many other European cities making it extremely accessible and holiday accommodation in Bruges is perfect for a fabulous weekend break or a longer holiday as a base for exploring Belgium, Northern France and Holland. The architecture and sights have a special romantic appeal making Bruges one of the great European destinations for couples and lovers.

The beauty of Bruges

It is so easy to just lose yourself in the stunning charm of Bruges. There are beautiful views in every direction and it’s no bore to simply walk the streets enjoying the sights and enjoying the romantic atmosphere. Many of the medieval streets are cobbled with tall houses, but some would say the best time to enjoy them is on a cruise on the canal that winds through the historic centre, as the rest of the city residents and tourists are making their way to dinner or back to their Bruges holiday rentals. The tranquillity which is enhanced as the city switches through dusk to night as you glide through the sights is definitely to be savoured.

Art for all sake

Bruges itself is a living museum. Indeed, the town hall which stands majestically surveying the Burg (just one of the city’s handsome squares) was constructed in 1376 and is a work of art in itself. There are some excellent museums in Bruges boasting art and treasures that span six centuries. The Groeninge Museum and the Memling Museum are tourist favourites.

Chocolate and beer and lace

Whilst not the most obvious culinary bedfellows, there is no denying that Belgian chocolate and Belgian beer have a well-deserved reputation. The chocolate shops that pepper the streets serve up the most delicious treats and when you enter a beer shop you are confronted with the most amazing array of choice, style and flavours (350 different types). It is impossible to not return to your Bruges holiday let with armfuls of beer and boxes of chocolate, whatever you set out to do that day. Beer is also very much part of the experience of dining out in Bruges. The restaurants are excellent and hosts are knowledgeable about food and this is the ideal opportunity to learn how to match beer with food instead of wine.

The other major product of Bruges is handmade lace. As you wonder the ancient streets you may catch a lacemaker at work – it is an incredible sight to see how sometimes ancient fingers move the bobbins so fast they become a blur. The lacemaking museum tells the history of lace making in Bruges and there are plenty of shops to buy a whole range of beautiful items made from this delicate material.

Beyond Bruges

Other historic cities are within easy reach from Bruges holiday rentals. The Belgian capital, Brussels is close enough for a day trip as are Ghent, Lille and Antwerp. If you don’t mind travelling 75 miles or so, you can also reach The Hague and Rotterdam in Holland.

Bruges Weather

Belgium is in Northern Europe so we’re talking pleasant summers but fairly crisp winters. Summer temperatures are perfect for city touring but if you want to avoid the crowds, avoid July and August. In cold winters with snowfall, Bruges is an even more magical sight and during the Christmas period the city takes on a fairytale appearance.

Getting there

After a flight into the UK it is an easy hop to Bruges. There are a good number of options to reach your Bruges holiday accommodation. Fly into Ostend Bruges International Airport, fly into Brussels and drive or take the train, catch a ferry from Dover to Ostend or even take the channel tunnel to Brussels.

Holiday Accommodation in Bruges (300+)

Recent Reviews

Comfortable spacious well equipped and centrally located.

5 of 5
Nico is very well organised from start to finish so the whole booking, check in and out was very smooth. Very roomy and convenient with dishwasher, full kitchen, drip coffee maker, washing machine and dryer downstairs. Two flights steps up with narrow treads typical of old European houses. Quiet, overlooks pleasant courtyard with swimming pool, not used in our time in Oct. In entry foyer large collection DVDs to borrow (we watched "In Bruges" of course). Also large range of beers and some wines at supermarket prices. Very close to central square "Markt". If you want good coffee, try "Brazila" on the left as you walk into Markt. Would love to go back if get the chance.
