See what one of our travellers had to say about Italy!

Italy is well known for its distinctive wine regions such as Lombardy, The Veneto, Tuscany and Umbria and grows over three hundred grape varieties. Whilst on holiday there recently, my partner and I had the pleasure to become familiar with some of them as we toured and wined and dined across several of the regions. One of our destinations was an 'agriturismo'' farm stay within walking distance of Montefalco, a small and picturesque hill top village in Umbria and part of the Sagrantino wine producing area.

Montefalco is off the main tourist trail, but is well positioned for drives to other well known centres such as Orvieto, Assisi and Perugia. It has an excellent restaurant come bottle shop come deli right on the main piazza and serves delicious Italian meals such as stuffed zucchini flowers - yum. Our agriturismo is a family run working farm growing grapes and olives and has room and villa accommodation with wonderful valley views. It too has an excellent restaurant also run by the family, with dad as chef, mum the waitress and the older father the matre de.

We arrived late one afternoon and reserved a table for our first night there and ordered the degustation dinner. I had noticed that the other dinners all had carafes of wine, which is often the custom in Italy and I asked for the wine list. This flummoxed the matre de somewhat, he indicating that the carafes where the choice, either white or red. Upon asking if he had anything other than the carafes, his dismayed expression fell away and he disappeared for a few minutes, returning with a bottle of 2005 Sagrantino in hand which he promptly opened and poured for tasting. And what a delight it was. Just the bouquet would have been enough. This was a wonderful wine.

As yet there was no mention of price and we thought that this was going to be expensive, but no matter, we were on holiday and settled in to enjoy a delicious dinner accompanied by this outstanding red. During our one week stay there we learned that the wine for the restaurant was produced on the farm and on check out, our 'expensive' bottle of 2005 Sagrantino ; 18 Euro for one of the best wines we had in Italy.

Salute.
