If you’re looking for variety of experiences, diverse culture and spectacular locales, then a holiday to Sri Lanka would surely not disappoint. Summarizing a description of this fantastic country in a couple of words is not only difficult but also virtually impossible. And surely after getting a taste of this eclectic country it is best that you learn more about it from a Sri Lanka travel guide that will help you plan your trip better. It is difficult to pinpoint whether it is the warmth of its people, the picturesque locations, amazing activities to choose from or best value for money that makes a holiday to Sri Lanka truly worthwhile. All in all, it is a combination of all these fascinating opportunities that make Sri Lanka truly the Pearl of the Orient. What’s more, you will get to select from a range of holiday homes in Sri Lanka to suit your holiday needs and budget.

Discovering Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a paradise for any connoisseur of culture and heritage. You would get to see some of the most unique historical and religious monuments in Sri Lanka. No tour of the ancient monuments would be complete without a visit to majestic 5th Century Sigiriya Fortress which is located in a dense tropical forest or the ancient capitals of Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura. From the cave temples of Dambulla to the Kandy’s religious centre, you will truly fulfill your dream of unraveling the mysteries of another era. The journey through the myriad roads of Sri Lanka would only get better as you discover the countless sights along your way.

Nothing beats a relaxing beach holiday! The vast expanse of almost uninterrupted golden beaches along the coast is one of major draws of Sri Lanka. If you’re looking for isolation and tranquility coupled with an occasional swim in the sea, then the beach would be ideal. Indulge in snorkeling, sailing or even scuba diving that comes highly recommended here.

The dense tropical forest cover in the mountainous interior of Sri Lanka offers countless opportunities to experience the thrill of adventure! You can experience nature’s fantastic camouflage at work through its wildlife that blends effortlessly in the vast tropical forest landscape. The forest provides refuge to about 2,000 elephants, four species of wild cats (including leopard), sloth bears and over 400 species of tropical birds. What’s more, you can explore the marvels of the forest through the four main national parks in Sri Lanka.

A festival that is definitely worth attending would have to be the ten day festival of Kandy Esala Perahera in July. It’s the perfect time to get a taste of Sri Lankan culture and enjoy the festivities that come along. Do bear in mind that it will not be easy to find accommodation during this period.

Exploring the Coasts of Sri Lanka

The south coast is perfect to experience idyllic village life and get a taste of colonial culture at the port of Galle. The secluded beaches in this region offer a perfect romantic getaway to holidaying couples. If you’re travelling with family then you can head to the beaches of the west coast that are more apt for family holidays. In addition to the beaches you can explore the many natural lagoons and inlets that can be found on the West Coast. If you’re who are looking for adventure, then the central mountains in Sri Lanka are particularly captivating. The central region is not only rich in nature but also culture with many ancient sites to visit. Kandy and Nuwara Eliya are interesting places of culture to visit.

Choosing the Perfect Climate to visit Sri Lanka

The main tourism season of Sri Lanka is between the months of December and March. To beat the cold British winter and also to make the most of the deals of the season, it is best to visit the country in this period. The temperature remains steady between 30 degrees Celsius and 24 degrees Celsius, all year long.

Your first stop in your Sri Lankan holiday would be Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). If you’re flying from London then you can opt to fly with Sri Lankan Airways which offers some good deals. From the airport you could choose from a host of domestic travel options to reach you holiday destination in Sri Lanka.

One of Sri Lanka’s best holiday homes

5 of 5
We were lucky enough to have only two of the four residences in this beautiful development occupied. This gave our house an extra special air of exclusivity. How can anyone not love waking up to overlook beautiful gardens, an enticing pool and the sea beyond. Add to this the care of Pushpa the housekeeper and chef who ensures you enjoy the best of Sri Lanka’s food delights, whether for breakfast or an evening meal. She allows you to have a real self indulgent experience. The sea is a delight - extensive beach which is kept relatively litter free for Sri Lanka and a sandy shore that makes plunging into the waves a joy. The waves are not big enough for surfing and there can be an undertow but hey, lovely warm water to frolic in is wonderful. Whilst local transport (tuk tuk) is easy and cheap the local sights are somewhat limited and there is a dearth of the usual local restaurants. This does not detract from the joys of your “home” at the villa itself. We would have liked better bed linen and towels but this was more than offset by a house that works! The shower is excellent, the bed comfortable and the furniture in good condition. There are books and dvds and generally you are at home in this lovely property. Then there is the tennis court - it has its limitations but it is an excellent facility to work off those self inflicted extra pounds. The court is set within the flower surrounded ‘compound’ which is not just 24hr. guarded but cared for in the very best fashion. As a well travelled couple we can only recommend Villa Margareta as an excellent relaxing holiday venue.

Great relaxing spot for a family or group holiday

5 of 5
We have just returned from a great relaxing family holiday, staying at Serendip. The place was very clean, well maintained and has all amenities we needed and was a large and comfortable space. We didn't want to come back... The location is a 5 minute walk from Hikkaduwa beach which has a number of good restaurants and bars. Rickshaws and taxi's are available when you want to travel further and are really reasonable. The bedrooms are all off off of the main living area which has a large dining table, internet access and TV, DVD and CD player. Air con throughout the villa is good and not overpowering. The kitchen is a good size, has a washing machine and all you would expect in a kitchen is here. Helpfully, towels are supplied and are plentiful making packing easier. The pool is a lovely respite from the heat, and coconut trees provide some shade in this area, dappled sunlight comes through but fierce sun is avoided. A bird of Paradise visits at about 4pm every day! John had provided us with all the information we would need and was friendly and helpful throughout the booking process. He was patient with us when we tried to organise things from both India and the UK. We were greeted at the airport warmly by manager Sarath, who was very capable, relaxed and helpful throughout our stay. He left us his BBQ when we bought fish from the harbour, delivered food from the hotel for us in a rickshaw (which is really helpful when you have a 1 year old baby)! and sent us in the right direction for everything we needed. For anyone who chooses to stay in the villa, I would say you could trust that you are getting the best service and best deal from Sarath. And he does great rice curry! Even the night watchman was helpful.. I would reccomend this holiday for anyone who wants peace with access to bars and restauarants and a relaxed beach holiday. We travelled with a 1 year old who had a great time and made good use of the shady verandah and pool. There is very little I could add about the villa in terms of improvement...the efforts made to help us were great. The inclusion of a travel cot and highchair would have topped it all off well, but this is a totally personal requirement! Well done to John, Yin and Sarath for providing a great spot with the personal attention you would expect from a resort style set up without being intrusive. Thanks for letting us stay.
