New Years Eve 2015
Ring in the New Year on home soil this 2014/15. If you're looking for a holiday destination from which to see the end of December and start of January, take a look at the following New Year's Eve events across the nation.
Sydney is one of the most popular places in the world - let alone Australia - during the New Year's Eve period. Head down to Sydney Harbour on December 31 for a night to remember. Famous for its breathtaking fireworks that illuminate the bridge and night sky, and keep your eyes peeled for celebrity sightings - Leonardo DiCaprio and Paris Hilton have been seen here in previous years!
You can secure a ticket to one of the VIP events that happens around the waterfront on the night or take advantage of the many free viewing spots in the area. There are even New Year's Eve cruises on offer for those who wish to take in the festivities from the water. Arrive early to watch air displays and a traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander smoking ceremony.
Take the kids to the 9:00 p.m. Family Fireworks session and enjoy a repeat event at midnight. The area gets incredibly congested during the event, so make the most of trains, buses and ferries operating on the night.
Make your way down to the Docklands for a fireworks extravaganza or base yourself at one of the many parts of the city that offer events throughout the day and evening. This year's program has yet to be announced, but if New Year's Eve in Melbourne is anything like last year you can expect a family-friendly event at Yarra Park, with a 10:00 p.m. finish in order to get the kids home to bed on time. Two stages feature free entertainment alongside games and activities, plus the young ones don't have to miss out on fireworks as there's a 9:30 p.m. display.
Along with Docklands, Treasury Gardens, Kings Domain and Flagstaff Gardens all feature celebrations around the midnight mark. Free DJs spin tracks while live artists are warming up, and the midnight fireworks display is truly spectacular. The fireworks launch from CBD rooftops so you can get a good glimpse of them no matter where you are in the city, with a synchronised countdown ensuring all of Melbourne rings in the New Year at the same time.
Celebrate the close of one year and the start of the next with New Years Eve in Canberra. The event takes place at both Civic Square and Garema Place, running from 7:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. The former location hosts an all-ages event, while the latter is perfect for party lovers. Enjoy local and national bands plus a state-of-the-art pyrotechnic show at both 9:00 p.m. and midnight.
Both locations are alcohol-free to ensure the event is safe and friendly, with ACTION buses operating a Nightrider service to help get you home safely.
Journey north for your New Year's Eve extravaganza and join the fun at Darwin's waterfront. The free event is family-friendly and invites you to spread out a picnic rug or chairs and sit back, relax and enjoy the evening's entertainment. It kicks off at 5:30 p.m. with music and kids' activities, with a glittering fireworks show at 9:00 p.m. The alcohol-free event has a vibrant atmosphere that can be enjoyed by groups of all sizes and ages.
