About The Open

The Australian Open-Manly Beach is a direct extension of another exciting surfing event, the U.S. Open of Surfing. Held annually at California's famous Huntington Beach, this U.S.-based festival is much like its Australian counterpart and combines creativity with athletes. According to executives from both Billabong and Hurley, the concept of the Australian Open was developed from the Huntington Beach event. Bob Hurley, founder and chairman of Hurley, said that event organisers were inspired by the great successes of the U.S. Open of Surfing to create an amazing event set in the ground zero of modern surfing, Manly Beach.

Past events have drawn more than 125,000 spectators to beach; in fact it's said that there were so many spectators that there was almost no sand in sight! This speaks to the popularity of this event, which has grown in leaps and bounds in the past few years.
