Vivid Sydney 2015
Sitting in prime position on the edge of Sydney Harbour, it’s easy to see why Sydney Opera House is instantly recognisable the world over. There really is no other building quite like it. The off-white curved ceiling arcs are synonymous with Sydney; its culture, its heritage and architecture. To celebrate this iconic building and its place in Sydney life, ‘Lighting of the Sails’ is an annual event as part of the Vivid Sydney festival, which is now in its sixth year.
Set to take place between May 22 and 8 June, 2015, Vivid Sydney is a festival of light, music and ideas, which sees the city transformed by some of the world’s creative leaders and innovative thinkers. From light installations and projections to performances and public talks, Vivid Sydney 2015 is sure to be the most exciting public exhibition in the southern hemisphere.
In 2015, there will be more than 10 main light shows; all set in and around Circular Quay, so getting between exhibits is sure to be an easy walk. In 2015, you can look forward to an array of different light shows - the Cloud, a collection of lights suspended in the air, gently moving with the breeze to give the illusion of a cloud, will be breathtaking. You can also play a game of duck-duck-goose, in a circle of container drums that light up!
One light show you don't want to miss is INTER/Play. This mesmerising display will turn Cadmans Cottage into an amazing light show, using the shape and architecture of the structure as a canvas - and here's the cool part - the light and graphics that get projected onto the house, will move and change shape based on the actions and movement of the crowd! A truly interactive experience.
The main light show will again be centred on Sydney Harbour. We're not going to spoil the surprise for you though - come and see for yourself!
The line-up has been released for Vivid 2015 - and just quietly, it's pretty awesome. This year will see the likes of Daniel Johns, Richard Bona, The Presets and USA jazz group, Bad Plus, doing their thing at a number of venues across Sydney.
Venues for Vivid Music range from the iconic Sydney Opera House to more intimate, soulful venues around the festival.
The other not-to-be-missed segement of Vivid MUSIC is 'Modulations’, a series of music performances, art installations and workshops that looked at the crossover between music, art and design. This year will see Modulations bring together Sydney's three best club nights in three different rooms, with a huge array of international and local acts to headline the night/s. Tickets to this once in a lifetime event go on sale very soon! Bill Drummond and Pharoah Sanders head up the other Modulations events - see the event website for further details.
One of the most popular and iconic music figures of all time, Morrissey, will be gracing Sydney Opera House with his presence during Vivid MUSIC. "An Evening With Morrissey" has already sold out, with the lucky fans that did get a ticket highly anticipating his return!
Masterminded by the incredible Jess Scully, Vivid Ideas brings some of Australia’s most innovative and creative minds together under one roof. 2015 will see a range of deep thinkers involved - from designer Stefan Sagmeiste, Emmy award winning writer Matthew Weiner, to panels of experts who will provoke the mind and give their opinions and insights into the early days of Australia's biggest and best IT companies.
For the family minded, the kids are catered for as well. Archikidz Play[ground] gives kids of all ages the opportunity to play until their heart is content, as the Hyde Park Barracks forecourt is transformed into an interactive, exciting playground. Parents and their children can get involved in workshops, puzzles and explore the history of Sydney and its surrounds. This is sure to be a thought-provoking but fun-filled day for the whole family.
Where to Stay
Vivid Sydney is busy! Although many of the events are ticketed, much of the festival is free to access, which is why it is so popular. It can also be incredibly difficult to find accommodation within the city centre during this time, so booking accommodation for Vivid in advance is always recommended. And if you’re lucky you may land a great little rental overlooking the whole show.
Where to Eat and Drink
It’s always easy to find something to sate the appetite around Circular Quay, but during Vivid Sydney, food and drink providers up the ante, big time. Pop-up restaurants and bars spring up on street corners and around the Opera House, while food trucks line the surrounding roads, often serving menus inspired by the festival. If you’re visiting Sydney as a special treat, why not pull out all the stops and enjoy a glass of bubbly at the Opera Bar, or dine alfresco under the outdoor heaters at Opera Kitchen.
What to Wear
Don’t be fooled; just because you’re in Australia it doesn’t mean it’s going to be hot! Many people visiting Sydney from overseas think Australia is perpetually hot - we're here to tell that it’s not. The months of May and June can be bitterly cold at night, so be sure to pack warm clothes for the cool evenings. Layers are a great option if you’re in and out of exhibits. It would be a shame to shiver through the show!
