Wings Over Illawarra
f you haven't had the chance to see the Australian Navy and other organisation's best and brightest in the skies, you can have your chance from May 2-3, at the annual Wings Over Illawarra. This loud, patriotic and spectacular event is one of the most fun in New South Wales, especially if you have future little aviators on your hands who want to see some of their favourite aircraft in action.
The stage is set for the event at Illawarra Regional Airport. Wings Over Illawarra will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The crowd favourite, the Air Show Flying Display, starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m.
Details of the Show
Wings Over Illawarra combines both modern and historic planes from the Australian Navy, including fast jets. Those with sensitive ears, be warned: Bring your earplugs, it will get loud. In addition to all of the sleek, ultra-fast aircraft you will see in the air, there will be a lot going on at the ground level as well. Guests will be able to view freestyle motocross displays, classic cars and motorcycles and defence force exhibits when they aren't marvelling at the magnificent feats performed in the sky.
Don't hesitate to bring the kids along, as there is plenty for them to see and enjoy at Wings Over Illawarra. The Steam Train Rides at the Illawarra Light Railway Museum are always a hit with guests. Visitors can enjoy both steam and diesel rides with a connecting shuttle bus that takes families to and from the air show. This way, your family really can see the best of planes, trains and automobiles.
Getting to Illawarra Airport
Wings Over Illawarra suggest that visitors try to plan their visit to Illawarra Airport by train, as there is limited parking. If you must drive, the site is located along Princes Highway at Albion Park Rail, around 100 kilometres south of Sydney, and is the ending point of the Illawarra Highway.
If you are coming in by train, the Albion Park train station is located across from the main entrance gate of the airport. Trains from Sydney will be providing additional rides and services for the event, so this could be the most affordable and stress-free option for families.
