Beer Can Regatta
Every year, the Lions Club of Darwin plans a fun-for-all extravaganza on the beach to support the worthy charities of Northern Territory. This year, participants and attendees gather on Mindil Beach from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. for the Beer Can Regatta in hopes of raising $30,000 for deserving community members. Events for all ages are on the agenda.
Darwin Lions Club Plans Fun for All Ages
All day, local vendors will staff stalls selling food, crafts and much more. Activities include the Battle of Mindil, a boat race where participants battle through flour bombs, sprays of water and more obstacles while trying to find an object hidden under the water before their competitors do.
Next up is the Junior Soft Drink Can Boat Race, where participants race in their own homemade boats built of used soda cans. Then comes the Adult Can Boat Race, where grownups try out their own homemade can boats. To make this race even more challenging, each boat has to hold four adults while trying to stay afloat. Then adults and kids join forces in the Adult and Junior Kayak Paddle to race to the finish.
Next comes the Henley on Mindil, where competitors try to see who can carry a Henley boat across the finish line first. Later, men and women will compete in the Iron Person Competition, followed by a Tug of War contest.
Competitions for Men and Women
Other events to catch during the day include the Best Novelty Hat contest, the Kids' Sand Castle Competition, a family slalom contest, kids beach races, and a thong throwing competition. The thong throwing competitors are divided up into men's and women's categories, and they'll be throwing the thongs you wear on your feet, not the other kind.
How the Beer Can Regatta Benefits the Community
Last year, the $30,000 raised by the Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta benefited HPA Helping People Achieve to purchase an embroidery machine.
This year, the Darwin Lions Club is looking for new and deserving charities to benefit from their Beer Can Regatta. The only price of admission is a single donated gold coin. Participants in the events are also asked for a small contribution upon entry. Bar facilities are available all day, and water and soft drinks will also be offered. Due to licensing restrictions, no one will be allowed to bring in alcoholic beverages from outside the regatta.
Accommodation Near Mindil Beach in Darwin
While visiting the Darwin area, consider a holiday rental instead of a hotel room. Holiday rentals are usually less expensive, and offer more room for families and groups travelling together to stretch out, relax and enjoy themselves. Units are fully furnished, and range from affordable single units to spacious five- or six-bedroom homes. Several units are located conveniently near Mindil Beach.
With so many fun events found at the Beer Can Regatta, why not plan a holiday in Darwin at the same time and enjoy the area this July.
