Clash of the Paddles, Hamilton Island

One of the biggest events of the year is Clash of the Paddles, held annually in Hamilton Island. This exciting racing event takes place over four days, combining several paddle sports. Formerly called the Hamilton Cup, Clash of the Paddles in 2015 will be scheduled for June, but the exact dates are not known yet. One of the world’s most difficult canoe racing events has expanded over the years to include a variety of competitions including dragon boating and stand-up paddle boarding. Registration starts on the official event website.
What to Expect
Races are broken down into a variety of experience levels. There are races in junior, open, and masters categories. A combination of professional athletes and regular people looking for a fun challenge turn up for the events. In addition to all of the on-water races, there is also an on-land entertainment program that makes for a fun weekend outside of the competition.
The Fine Print
The complete schedule of races is available on the event website. Competition begins early, at 6:30 a.m., and continues through the afternoon until about 3:30 p.m. Beyond the races, entertainment includes a “Fun Zone” for the kids, live music each evening on Front Street, and nightly food stalls at the marina. Highlights from the racing are also shown daily on a big screen. The biggest party of the event is the closing ceremony held on the final night.
