Wangaratta Jazz Festival
The Wangaratta Jazz and Blues Festival has been showcasing some of the biggest local and international jazz and blues acts since its inception in 1990. In 2014 they will be holding their annual music extravaganza from 31 October to 3 November.
Attended by literally thousands of visitors every year, the festival is Wangaratta’s biggest event on the calendar, and has become the leading jazz event in all of Australia. With big name acts performing every year over the weekend, the 2014 festival boasts over 350 local and international artists.
Behind the scenes
The festival was the brainchild of a few local business people who wanted to bring their dream to life, and establish a unique festival that would bring people from far and wide to see and experience the magic of their cathedral city. They wanted to encourage tourists to visit their city, and the idea was to give them something to look forward to.
All sorts of holiday accommodation went up, guesthouses, holiday rentals, villas and self-catering apartments were being booked up every year as the festival grew in leaps and bounds.
The festival has made a name for itself over the years with its extremely high standards and showcasing only the best in the industry. In 2000, the festival won the Victorian Hallmark Event award, for its outstanding contribution to Wangaratta and the state of Victoria.
Included in the festivities is the National Jazz Awards, the Youth Jazz Workshops, Jazz master classes, and all sorts of fun events all over the Wangaratta area and surrounding wine regions. As the event has become so popular, it is recommended that you book your accommodation well in advance. Nearby Myrtleford could be a good option for your base.
You don’t have to be a Jazz fan to fall head over heels in love with the vibe, the music and the talent at the festival.
