Hot Air Balloon
One of the most spectacular territories in all of Australia is the Atherton Tablelands. While seeing the splendour from the ground can be pretty impressive, a lot of people opt for getting a bird's eye view of the area. Located in tropical northern Queensland, the Atherton Tablelands experience beautiful weather, enjoy many scenic vistas and is expansive enough for a slow-paced tour from the stratosphere.
Sounds of Silence
We all love a good tour, but let's face it, sometimes they can be rather noisy, especially if you are opting for a bus, train, water taxi, helicopter or plane. When you are up in the air, all of the hub bub of the world is hundreds of feet below you, which evokes a sense of quiet and calm. The only time you will ever hear any noise at all is when the propane is firing up - the rest is smooth sailing, which is perfect if you are looking to really relax and unwind.
Views Like None Other
If you are a photographer, you definitely don't want to miss out on the 360-degree views you can spot from a hot air balloon. Because the hot air balloon gently glides you back down to the Earth's surface, you have plenty of opportunities to take a snapshot of your favourite scenic spots. When's the last time you could say that on a tour?
There really isn't a bad time to take to skies in the Atherton Tablelands, as the weather here is usually favourable year-round. However, you may want to opt for an appointment at sunset or sunrise. Not only are the winds calmer during these times, you will get to take in all of the yellows, oranges and reds that paint the sky, hillsides and fields below during dawn and dusk. This also allows you more time to go exploring throughout the rest of the day.
There are several companies in the area that you can choose from if you are looking to embark across the Atherton Tablelands. A great majority of them are located in Cairns or Port Douglas, but you can also find some spots at the Northern beaches or Palm Cove. Most of these airborne tours only last between 30 minutes to 1 hour, so you will have plenty of time to explore other highlights of the region, such as bushwalks, wine tastings or paddle boarding.
