Things to Do in Lorne
A Peaceful Hamlet on the Great Ocean Road
The entire span of the Great Ocean Road is spectacular, drawing travellers from around the globe. Built to honour the heroic Anzacs for their valiant efforts during World War I, this highway passes near Lorne, where some of the most majestic scenery lies. The Twelve Apostles, fascinating limestone formations in the water, is one such spectacle.
The Gables is an attraction set apart from the bustle of the larger, more popular tourist attractions. The Gables are massive slabs of rock just underneath the surface of the sea, which once supported massive cliffs. Thunder Cave is also nearby, an intriguing cliff formation over the water that creates thunderous sounds as the ocean waves roll in.

Golfers and tennis players enjoy a stop at Lorne Country Club, where equipment is available for hire. In addition to the well-kept courts, the club also features a fun 9-hole course in a natural bush setting with ocean views. Fishing is also popular here. The best catches are barracuda, whiting and trevally, which are abundant in Louttit Bay.
At the mouth of the Erskine River, a suspension bridge sits adjacent to a boardwalk. This is a quite romantic spot, off the beaten path of tourism. A beach is nearby, welcoming the passerby with a refreshing walk or restful place to sit and watch the sun set.
George Street and Holiday Road offer shopping and dining for all tastes and budgets. If you're in Lorne in January, be sure to see the Pier to Pub Swim, noted by "The Guinness Book of World Records" as the largest organized ocean swim in the world. Lorne Beach and Park is where families frolic on the beach, swim, and surf. Picnic and walking areas are also available at Lorne Beach and Park.
