Right from the start of making this reservation our hosts Joe & Josie were wonderful. They were aware of our circumstances and let us into their beautiful property 3 hrs early.
There was a bowl of fruit, chocolate & a bottle of wine kindly left for us. The furnishings and appliances were excellent and more than met our needs. The 2 queen beds were very comfortable. There was butter, milk etc etc in the fridge to get us started until we could get to the shops.
The location is excellent. The local shopping centre is within easy walking distance and had everything. The tram stop to the city only 100m walk. St Kilda foreshore 50m away and great for a walk/run or just to sit & relax. We loved our stay here and will be back. Can';t thank our hosts Joe & Josie enough.
Photographs would have a hard time capturing the breathtaking ambience of the kitchen/living room/outdoor space, surrounded by funky beach town, clanking trams, AFL ovals, rowers skimming aross the lake, busy traffic far below, a tranquil bay (of which I saw the other side for the first time), cruise ships and Spirit of Tassie coming and going, and the modern radiant Melbourne skyline. I dont think any of us will ever forget the experience. We two couples rented the apartment for the tennis this year, and we couldnt get enough of it. We ended up making dinner in the full kitchen every night because we could not tear ourselves away from the glimmering city below.
However, it came at a price, which for some guests may not be a big deal, but for others would be a showstopper. We worked around it. The "open king bedroom" noted on HomeAway as is simply an alcove off the living room/dining room/kitchen. My partner was crestfallen when he saw it - because that was going to be our room - so there is zero privacy, basically sleeping in the living room. I solved this by erecting a bamboo barrier I got at the hardware store for $30, which was enough to feel decent privacy. Our mates were kindly considerate of this floorplan flaw, and we all went to bed at the same time each night which we normally don't do. But in fact, it never mattered as we were always either getting ready for the tennis, at the tennis all day, enjoying the sunset and making dinner, or watching the tennis on tv or fast alseep. Both rooms have their own full bathrooms, which gave us more privacy in some ways than last year's apartment.
The building is a block short walk to the tram to Melbourne or St Kilda, an easy ride to Woolies for groceries and grog, an easy ride to the beach. The pool on the roof was wonderful every morning, warm and sparkling if not a little shallow. The gym seemed to be excellent. The parking in the unit's spot was easy. We ran into some housekeeping problems that the owner will undoubtedly correct with her cleaners.
So, before you book this apartment for two couples, I suggest you seriously consider privacy in the king room vs entertaining every night in one of the most incredible spaces I have seen in the city. It's a close call, but our group will probably find something else next year as we like our privacy, and it is fun to live in different neighborhoods in Melbourne each year.
